Time flies, as they say, when you’re having fun, and that’s undoubtedly been the case after a brilliant first quarter working in partnership with MG ALBA, to promote BBC ALBA & FilmG.
Electrify became only the second communications agency in the history of MG ALBA/BBC ALBA when we took up a two-year contract on 1 July.
Since then our team has been supporting MG ALBA who co-operate BBC ALBA with the BBC, and some of its other key Gaelic-led projects.
We’ve picked out some of our highlights from the first three months...
Undoubtedly one of the best-known and successful original dramas produced in Scotland for a long time, Bannan has become a vital part of the BBC ALBA schedule.
Produced by Chris Young, who is perhaps best known for The Inbetweeners, such has been the success of the drama, set in fictional town of Camus, that a long-term four-year contract was agreed in June.
Of course, the communications challenge about a programme entering its fourth season is how to keep the news narrative fresh.
We worked to develop two strands of activity: the first murder to be shown on the programme, and introducing one of the oldest actresses in Scotland, Peggy Wood, who at 88 made her TV debut four years ago!
In partnership with The Herald and Sunday Post we created interview opportunities on each theme, which led to extensive newspaper and online coverage. In response to latter feature on Peggy, it was also picked up by The Scottish Sun.
The West Highland Free Press ran with Bannan on their front page under the headline, “There’s been a murder”!
Turas iongantach do fhir-smàlaidh Steòrnabhagh / Stornoway to Serbia – Putting out the flames
This remarkable documentary charts an annual pilgrimage organised by the Scottish Emergency Rescue Association to Eastern Europe.
Firefighters from across Scotland, most notably Stornoway, travelled to Serbia to repurpose a decommissioned fire engine, the 50th the charity has donated. Whilst in the Balkans they also provide vital training to local firefighters.
We worked with Scotland on Sunday to tell the story with a featured interview with one of the firefighters. The programme was also featured on BBC Radio Scotland’s John Beattie programme which took an in-depth look at the story with the producers at MacTV and one of the firefighters.
And to make it a hat-trick, the Edinburgh Evening News also previewed the programme talking with one of the firefighters based in the capital.
Ceathrar air a' Chuiltheann / Four on the Cuillin
Promotion for this programme reflects an evolving strategy Electrify has introduced with BBC ALBA programmes. The actual transmission of this documentary hasn;t been announced yet.
This three part documentary follows four young people from Glasgow who take on the greatest challenge in British mountaineering, climbing The Cuillin on Skye, with famed rock faces including the Inaccessible Pinnacle and Am Basteir Tooth, and peaks along the way including eleven Munros.
Four on a Cuillin is due to TX around Christmas, and so we can’t give away the story right now (more nearer the time) but we did focus on setting up PR opportunities around the start of the journey.
We worked with the young people in Glasgow as they trained at Govan Climbing Centre, creating a picture opportunity for The Herald & Glasgow Evening Times. We followed this up by inviting the West Highland Free Press to join the group at the start of their journey, for an exclusive teaser piece.
Earlier this summer, the BBC announced that popular children’s gameshow Raven was to return to its screens with a new star, Aisha Toussaint.
As part of the agreement, a Gaelic-version of the programme is to be made for BBC ALBA, marking a unique opportunity for young Gaelic speakers to experience one of TV’s most popular programmes.
To promote the spin off, we teamed up with four Gaelic speaking kids who are taking part and Aisha, herself for a photo opportunity at Craigmillar Castle in Edinburgh.
The Scotsman & The Herald covered the story, as did the Inverness Courier and Highland News.
When we looked at this programme, we asked ourselves: “What’s THE Gaelic programme you remember growing up as a kid?”The answer (and we did test this) was Dotaman.
Well, the presenter of the hit-kids show, which ran for 15 years, now stars in a different type of programme, “DIY Donnie”.
Our research on Donnie led us to Peterhead Prison where it all started and the incredible life that the TV star has had.
We pitched the idea of a feature with the Sunday Mail, who on learning more about Donnie’s life enthusiastically picked up the baton. The result was a super spread the day before the first episode.
FilmG @ 10
FilmG is MG ALBA’s short film competition and encourages young people to create brilliant short stories or features.
Each year’s competition is accompanied by a theme and a stunning poster to support that, created by the brilliant Skye based creative agency Canan, who run the project.
To celebrate a special event at which all of the artwork from these posters was to be displayed at Glasgow Tramway, we brought back one of the “stars” of the early artwork, Margaret-Jane Mason with her artwork for a photocall on location.
The celebration was covered by The Herald, and at the time of writing we expect further coverage during the course of October with content planned to run. BBC News online also featured a gallery of the artwork from the last decade.
SPFL Season Launch
This season, BBC ALBA are broadcasting 38 Scottish Premiership matches first and in full on the channel (usually on Saturdays at 6pm).
To celebrate this new coverage, we took Hibernian’s new star Vykintas Slivka to the Royal Mile at Edinburgh Festival time to promote the real “biggest show in town” coming up that weekend when the Easter Road side returned to the top flight with a game against Partick Thistle.
Vykintas, who was a great sport, posed with a giant branded microphone and was joined by some of the stars of the festival.
Coverage was extensive, including The Scotsman, The Sun, Daily Record and Edinburgh Evening News.
We were delighted to see The Scotsman feature the face of BBC ALBA’s Autumn Launch on the front page of the newspaper the following day.
One of the big summer festival highlights in Scotland is Belladrum, and it was super to see The Scottish Sun preview coverage on the channel.
Other programmes to be featured included His Bloody Project (BBC News Online), Scotland’s Game Changers (Scotland on Sunday), and Turas a' Bhradain (Caithness Courier).
